Getting Started on Your Comic Series

Updated: Aug 27

Have you been thinking about starting your own comic series but you just don't know where to begin?

Starting any new project can be a challenge, and building the foundation to get started can be even more frustrating. But not to worry! I'm here to offer you some guidance based on my own experience as a comic artist who makes a multi-volume series.

  1. It all starts with an idea! You just have to continue to expand on it.

You ever find yourself casually sitting around at home and your imagination just instantly starts to wander? Then BOOM! You've thought of an amazing plot idea and now you're trying to figure out what to do with it. Well first thing's first...WRITE IT DOWN! Keeping a typed up page of notes about my story has helped guide me in world building, creating important plot points, and shaping each of my characters and their development.

  2. Think of ways to keep pushing the story forward.

Don't just stop with thinking about the plot as a whole. What are the elements that will move it forward and make your story progress? How will your characters develop as individuals and what obstacles will they all face? Those are questions you should always think about when you're trying to expand your plot and world build.

  1. Just remember to breathe and have fun with it!

It's not good or beneficial to stress yourself over making the "perfect" story. Perfectionist syndrome can sometimes hold you back from your full potential, and at times it can even prevent you from starting in the first place.

I've seen some artists say they don't want to start their series until their art is better, but the truth is your art will ALWAYS evolve. If you draw consistently enough, you will start to see the changes in your style and your characters. There will be inevitable improvements.

Even I, as the creator of the sapphic series Our Little Universe, can see so much evolution in my art style as my series progresses. You can definitely see the improvement from Volume 1 vs. Volume 4.

So why wait?! Nobody is perfect. I know as artists we can look back on certain older pieces and be like "Whoa! I see mistakes!"

But that is absolutely fine! Do NOT beat yourself up over it. Art will always be a learning curve. But your art comes from the heart and so does your series. Make it out of YOUR true passion for it, not for what others might think of it.

And with that, I'll leave you a little Inspirational Post I made for anyone who is aspiring to go on this creative path. Remember to always stay authentic to yourself and just enjoy the journey!
